John is an independent professional evaluator working mainly in the humanitarian sector where he has broad experience in over 65 countries in a work career spanning 40 years. He holds three masters level degrees (in engineering, management, and social science). He has led nearly 40 evaluations in the humanitarian sector in the last 20 years and participated in another 20. John is the author of ALNAPs pilot guide to Real Time Evaluation (2009) and is co-author of ALNAP Evaluation of Humanitarian Action Guide (2016). John was the evaluation advisor and coordinator for the Tsunami Evaluation Coalition that carried out the last system-wide evaluation of a major humanitarian response (the 2004 Tsunami) and wrote the expanded summary report as well as co-authoring the synthesis report. John has carried out real-time evaluations in Mozambique, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Greece, and is advising on a planned real-time evaluation in Kenya.
