Dirk Czarnitzki Ph.D. is a full professor in the Dept. of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation at KU Leuven in Belgium. He holds a doctoral degree in economics from the University of Duisburg-Essen. He has been a research fellow at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, Germany, and post-doc at UC Berkeley before he joined KU Leuven in 2005. His research interests are mainly in the fields of the economics of innovation and applied microeconometrics. The lines of research address topics such as the evaluation of public innovation policies, the economics of science, intellectual property rights, corporate governance and innovation, as well as knowledge and technology transfer including academic entrepreneurship. Dirk has published more than 60 articles in international, refereed journals including te Journal of Economics and Business Statistics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, Management Science, European Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Research Policy and many others. Furthermore, Dirk has a high expertise in policy-relevant contract research: among many other projects, he has conducted a pilot study on the impact evaluation of enterprise support within European Cohesion Policy on behalf of DG Regional Policy, and he has been a member of independent expert groups for DG Research and Innovation on R&D tax credits as well as on the final evaluation the Eurostars programme, a joint initiative of the European Commission and EUREKA for funding innovation in small and medium-sized firms. Dirk has also been consulting the Flemish and German governments and also the World Bank and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
